How the Library is Funded
Harrison Village Library is a 501©3 non-profit organization, governed by our Board of Trustees. The citizens of Harrison appropriate funds for the library each year at Town Meeting, and our Board of Trustees raise the additional amount needed for our operating costs, mainly through two major fundraisers: the Annual Appeal and Golf Tournament. The library does not currently have an endowment from which to draw income.
The Friends of the Library raise money for “extras”, including museum passes, our movie license, and exterior decorations such as hanging baskets, wreaths and kissing balls. Their major fundraiser is the Book, Bake and Plant Sale. We have been very fortunate in receiving support for children’s programming from a couple of private foundations who wish to remain anonymous, as well as local organizations. The library has also received support for major capital improvements from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and has received grants from the Maine Community Foundation’s Cumberland County Rural Libraries Fund.
How to Get Involved
Join the Board of Trustees
Our Board meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month, and each member serves on one of two standing committees, Operations or Development, which also meet monthly. Ad hoc committees may be needed for special events such as the Golf Tournament; generally, it’s a case of “all hands on deck” for this, and for the Christmas in Harrison events. The Board of Trustees sets policy, approves the budget, and advocates for the library in the community. To learn more about joining the Board of Trustees, please contact President Jon Whitney at jonwhitney123@gmail.com.
Join the Friends of the Library
The Friends currently meet on an as-needed basis, mainly in the spring to prepare for the Book, Bake and Plant Sale. They may be asked to volunteer at special events and are also asked to advocate for the library in the community. To learn more about joining them, please contact President Sarah Bernard at bernard.sarah.j@gmail.com.
Volunteer Your Time
By volunteering, you can put your unique skills to use and help us to provide quality services to our patrons, as well as contribute to our community. Traditional library volunteers help the staff by doing everything from preparing books for circulation, to numbering book series, to helping prep for Storytime, to decorating the library for holidays. We currently have a few volunteers who perform these tasks when needed, but we’d like to expand our ideas of “library volunteer”. Any skill you would like to share with others could become a service you perform for the library, or a program for the community.
Here’s what volunteers have done recently: Tend the library gardens; organize a chess club; tend indoor plants; present programs (local history, pasta-making workshop, and time for children with a therapy dog have all been made possible by volunteers). The possibilities are practically endless! To learn more about volunteering, please contact Library Director Kathleen Kramer at director@harrisonvillagelibrary.org.
